Spanish actor Aldo Sambrell [rn: Alfred Sanchez Brell] died on July 10, 2010 at 5pm local time, in a Madrid hospital after suffering three strokes.

He was a prolific and memorable character actor in dozens of Eurowesterns, action films, horror films and was cast in a number of high profile USA European-lensed productions as well. He also appeared in Jess Franco's KILLER BABRYS, TENDER FLESH and KILLER BARBYS VS DRACULA. 

He will probably be best remembered for a variety of Spaghetti Western villains in such titles as THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY, NAVAJO JOE, REQUIEM FOR A GRINGO, to name but a few. 

There's an excellent obituary on Tom Bett's WESTERNS ALL'ITALIANA* blog. As I wrote on the comment section there, I considered him the presence which held the Eurowestern genre together. In his numerous roles for all the major directors in many of the key titles he became one of the genre's most recognized icons and seemed ubiquitous. He had a "look" and always gave each role all he had. A personal favorite Aldo Sambrell performance was a rare leading role in Manuel Cano's 1972 VOODOO BLACK EXORCIST. He will be missed. RIP

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SOLEDAD MIRANDA: RIP

The immortal (so far) Soledad Miranda was born on July 9, 1943 and died on August 18, 1970 in a tragic automobile accident. What more can I say? She really can't be explained in words, one has to see her. Although she was a singer, she was usually dubbed in the export versions of her Jess Franco films. It wasn't her voice as much as her "presence"-- an uncanny, mysterious, edgy, haunting presence. The hypnotic way she moved, posed and her still living eyes, orbs which penetrate and which follow you.  She left too soon. 

 I wonder if she knew how good she was?

Alex and his Brazilian experimental jazz band, BUI, based in Rio, created the unique musical score for the new Web Series which I created, RETURN OF THE BLOODSUCKING NAZI ZOMBIES, a kind of science fiction homage to Jess Franco's LA TUMBA DES LOS MUERTOS VIVIENTES (1981) and the Nazi zombie genre.

RETURN OF THE BLOODSUCKING NAZI ZOMBIES: New Jess Franco related Web Series

An original new science fiction/horror web series which I created, wrote and am presenting is debuting here soon. It all started out with a viewing of Jess Franco's LA TUMBA DE LOS MUERTOS VIVIENTES (1981), actually an alternate version retitled BLOODSUCKING NAZI ZOMBIES.

The series was actually filmed in Belgorod, Russia, by a talented filmmaker, Mathis Vogel. Several pilot episodes were shot in the winter and spring of 2010. The budget was VERY low and the results are surprisingly good, or at least should interest regular blog readers.

Lina Romay was born Rosa Maria Alrmirall Martinez on June 25, 1954 (some sources give June 23) in Barcelona, Cataluna, Spain. She has acted in over 100 Jess Franco films since 1973. She is also a director in her own right and has been editor/assistant director on many Jess Franco productions.

MIRRORS: LA CASA DE LAS MUJERES PERDIDAS

Thanks to firirinabe for this screencap from Jess Franco's ultra rare 1982 melodrama LA CASA DE LAS MUJERES PERDIDAS. It once again illustrates the director's strategic deployment of mirrors as a way of opening out a film into three or more dimensions and evidences his use of a cubist style as a way of representing a complex character matrix.

This poster for the 1982 Ajita Wilson-Lina Romay Spanish hardcore item directed by Carlos Aured (HORROR RISES FROM THE TOMB)[and, according to the IMDB, Sergio Bergonzelli (IN THE FOLDS OF THE FLESH, BLOOD DELIRIUM)] is on Amazon.com.

If you haven't seen this, it's a way, way, way, way out hardcore crime roughie very loosely based on the Patty Hearst case. Only this time it's in Spain. A group of criminals led by Ricardo Diaz (CUTTHROATS NINE) break into a vacant villa where they hold an heiress for ransom.

It's actually a pretty interesting oddity with good performances by Diaz, Romay and the late, great Wilson. One steamy interlude involves the two stars of MACUMBA SEXUAL getting involved with a candle! There's plenty of group sex and offensive sexual violence. The film has a somewhat droll sense of humor and a philosophical twist.

Our Spanish correspondent Nzoog has reported that the IMDB is incorrect {wouldn't be the first time!) re Bergonzelli's involvement. I've got a composite from VSOM, so you know how THAT looks! It's fullscreen (Spanish softcore scenes) and letterboxed for the hardcore sequences. But at least it's English subtitled.

The sequence where the ransom is collected is surprisingly well shot and edited by Aured, considering this was obviously a quickie job. It's downloadable from several sources.

Rosalba Neri as the prisoner Zoe in Jess Franco's 99 WOMEN (1969)

The sensual and multi-talented Italian actress Rosalba Neri was born June 19, 1939. She was a most fascinating, and often scene stealing, performer in Italian genre films from the early 1960s through the 1970s. She was a striking presence and proved she had solid dramatic credentials in such films as AMUCK (1972), THE SEDUCERS (1970), SLAUGHTER HOTEL (1971), JOHNNY YUMA (1968), LADY FRANKENSTEIN (1971) and THE DEVIL'S WEDDING NIGHT (1973).. 

Besides 99 WOMEN she also had memorable roles in Jess Franco's JUSTINE (1968), THE CASTLE OF FU MANCHU (1969) and showed she could do comedy as well as drama with her amusing performance as the Albanian security officer in LUCKY, THE INSCRUTABLE (1967).

What is your favorite Rosalba Neri performance? I think for me it's a toss up between her nymphomaniacal mental patient in SLAUGHTER HOTEL and her vampire Queen in THE DEVIL'S WEDDING NIGHT.

LORNA THE EXORCIST DVD NEWS & SCREENGRABS

The release date for the DVD of LORNA, THE EXORCIST will be delayed for at least a month, according to the Mondo Macabro site. Amazon.com has it available in August but we'll keep our eyes open.  It will have French and English language tracks with Eng. subtitles, a Franco documentary, poster galleries and more. Runtime is being listed at approx. 84m. and it looks that the "scene" is in there!

Video quality looks terrific considering all we've had for decades are dark, fuzzy, censored, grainy dubs.

ALDO SANBRELL news

                               

Aldo Sanbrell aka Sambrell in my favorite of his movies, M. Cano's VUDU SANGRIENTO aka VOODOO BLACK EXORCIST (1972). The 79 year old Spanish actor also appeared in several Jess Franco films, KILLER BARBYS, TENDER FLESH and KILLER BARBYS VS. DRACULA, each time as a villain.

Of course, he is most well known for his supporting roles in dozens of Euro westerns from the 1960s onward including THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY, NAVAJO ROLE (one of his most memorable villain roles), ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, A BULLET FOR THE GENERAL, REQUIEM FOR A GRINGO, HANDS UP DEAD MAN-YOU'RE UNDER ARREST!, ARIZONA COLT RETURNS and many, many more. I had some email contact with him when I was working on an article about the director Manuel Cano. He gave me some valuable information and I want to belatedly thank him and wish him well. He was always a memorable face and presence, a dependable, prolific actor. Thanks for the movie memories, Aldo.

"I have been dying in scores of Westerns." Today, at 79, Aldo Sanbrell lies at the General Hospital of Alicante in guarded condition.

As it dawned on Almeria in 1975 Spain, Sean Connery was eating with Aldo Sanbrell. They were filming THE WIND AND THE LION and the Almeria coast surrendered to the charms of two famous actors who left the night together. In the desert of Tabernas were friends, admirers and former colleagues from the Western side of Europe, the heartless evil in the films of Sergio Leone and Mario Camus; a loved and respected actor. Even today there are many tributes to Sanbrell, black like the back of an insect, as he challenged Clint Eastwood, Burt Reynolds, Lee Van Cleef and Charles Bronson holding a revolver in the dust made epic by Ennio Morricone. They have applauded his death, had shot down evil; the cruel gringo traveling to hell with his skull split by a Navajo tomahawk. Now, 40 years after the decline of the Spaghetti Western, his life now far from the stage and warmed only by the most faithful: his wife and his representative. 79 year old Aldo Sanbrell, after suffering three strokes, is in a room at the General Hospital of Alicante, a city where he consummated his disappointment with the same industry that took him to its heights. An actor in more than 170 films since his debut as an extra in KING OF KINGS in 1961, he has known more recognition in his country and a modest mention in the festival of short films by Sax in 2007.

Jose Portoles, manager and close friend of the actor since he moved to Alicante in 2006, reported on May 25 that the veteran actor was admitted after getting a poor prognosis. "Today, neither AISGE or the Spanish Film Academy have shown interest in his condition. He is the great desert of Tabernas. The movie 800 BULLETS, by the president of the Academy Alex de la Iglesia, was inspired by his personal friendship with Clint Eastwood. Sanbrell agonises today alone, forgotten by the industry in an Alicante hospital. That's how Rome re-pays its Generals," Portoles laments.

Sanbrell happened in Madrid during the Civil War and its aftermath, until at age 18 he was called up by the regime for military service. "He said he was not going to work for an army maintained by a hated regime. He was very athletic and went to Mexico to make a living as a singer and football player, after a time with Rayo Vallecano in Madrid. In the land of Pancho Villa, he sang flamenco, learned English, emulated Sinatra under the stage name of Alfredo de Ronda and played football in Puebla and Monterrey. "Each day of filming became a party. Eastwood twisted cigars and the Dollars trilogy came from his cigarette. Eli Wallach, 'the ugly' of THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY, confessed that the first thing he learned in Spanish was 'tapas, drinks and shrimp' from Sanbrell during filming."

One year after participating in the culmination of the Leone Western saga, he played alongside Burt Reynolds as a young NAVAJO JOE. His performance was indelible as seen in his recent participation in the TV series The Commissioner.

Bedridden, Aldo smiles and says that he can not speak because he is sedated, not because he his weak. In the room, there are his wife and Portoles. And Burt Reynolds, who, from the cover of NAVAJO JOE, reminds him.

SHE KILLED IN ECSTASY, 40 years later....

 
2010 is the 40th anniversary of Jess Franco's SIE TOTETE IN EKSTASE aka SHE KILLED IN ECSTASY. It was confirmed during my conversation with Paul Muller that the film was in production during June-July 1970, following VAMPYROS LESBOS and immediately preceding the final Jess Franco-Soledad Miranda film, THE DEVIL CAME FROM AKASAVA.
 
Rewatching this again recently I was struck by the overwhelming mood of grief and rage telegraphed by the actress as the avenging wife of the tormented scientist (Fred Williams).
The eroticism oftens veers off into the perverse-grotesque during the kill scenes. It's kind of a reworking of themes and characters from MISS MUERTE (1965) but this time the emphasis is much more on dark sexuality.
 
I also really appreciate the unique visual style. The director often shoots through reflective surfaces, furniture and strategically placed objects, like the wine glass Soledad sets right in front of the lens in the scene where she seduces Ewa Stroemberg.
 
It shares catchy music cues heard in both VAMPYROS LESBOS and DER TEUFEL KAM AUS AKASAVA by Hubler, Schwab and Bruno Nicolai.
 
Franco appears as a hypocritical member of the Medical Board who suffers a fate worse than death at the hands of the enraged Mrs. Johnson.
 
Soledad Miranda was always a striking presence and her performance here is one of her very best. She is, as usual in her Franco appearances, credited as Susann Korda. The direction is credited to "Frank Hollman."
 
The approximately 73 m IMAGE DVD is missing some transitional footage seen in other versions. Thanks to Mirek Lipinski for that information.

Richard Harrison in action against the hideous Medusa in MEDUSA AGAINST THE SON OF HERCULES, a favorite of his sword and sandal efforts. 

Harrison appeared in one Jess Franco film, the 1988 spy-action film, DARK MISSION. I had a chance to talk with him about it [thanks to Bill Connolly] and he proved to be a thoughtful, good humored gentleman, but was not all that impressed with Jess or the role. 

He had roles in over 100 films from the 1957 science fiction title KRONOS [he was the pilot who destroyed the title creature] to JERKS (2000). He always put his all into whatever part he played and specialized in action heroes. He also had a supporting role in the big budget Hollywood hit musical SOUTH PACIFIC. 

Some favorite Richard Harrison films include Antonio Margheriti's VENGEANCE (1968), REVENGE OF THE GODFATHER (1975), a serious, sexy turn in Joe D'Amato's VOODOO BABY (1980) and the mad Godfrey Ho composite, SCORPION THUNDERBOLT.

BLOOD TIMES!

Here's a classic issue of Louis Paul's marvelous 1990's zine BLOOD TIMES. Signed by the late Paul Naschy this issue also featured my essay on several early 1980's Jess Franco films, looking at them as a distinct thematic/stylistic unit while examining their look, sound and feel. I still have my issue and feel proud to have been a contributor.

ANTONIO OZORES (1928-2010)

Have you seen Jess Franco's first feature film?


Actor-comedian Antonio Ozores


Comedians can seem to be immortal or at least unmoved by the prospect of death. The great Spanish comic Antonio Ozores died on May 12, 2010. He appeared in over 160 films, 200 plays, acted in television and radio shows, from 1950 onward. He somewhat ironically passed away on the 80th birthday of fellow Spaniard Jess Franco who made his feature film debut in 1959 directing Ozores in TENEMOS 18 ANOS. The actor-comedian played multiple roles in that film and also co-wrote the dialogue.

Joseph Sarno (1921-2010)

 
A somewhat fuzzy, dark image of Marie Liljedahl from Joseph W. Sarno's 1968 INGA, which nonetheless telegraphs some of the downbeat, serious mood of this vintage Swedish lensed erotica. Sarno died yesterday in New York City. He was 89.
 
A prolific director of over 100 sexploitation/erotic features from 1961 to 2004, Sarno had a singular visual style. His films ranged from soft to hardcore and some were credited to his various beards. I've only managed to see INGA and his lurid, German lensed gothic, DIE FLUCH DER SCHWARZEN SCHWESTERN aka VAMPIRE ECSTASY aka THE DEVIL'S PLAYTHING aka VEIL OF BLOOD (1973). The former, of course, launched Ms. Liljedahl into a career which would include Jess Franco's EUGENIE... THE STORY OF HER JOURNEY INTO PERVERSION (1970). I always thought that VEIL OF BLOOD makes an interesting double bill with Franco's LA COMTESSE NOIRE [FEMALE VAMPIRE], also made in 1973.
 
Considering the genre in which he worked, he had a rather high critical reputation, which grew over the years. I would like to see more of his work, especially such vintage 1960s titles as SIN IN THE SUBURBS.

L'HORRIBLE DR. ORLOF

Thanks to Monique for sending this. This composition illustrates JF's early mastery of lighting and composition. The period ambiance is perfectly established in the details of wardrobe and setting. That baby spot on Vernon's face is arresting, illuminating Orlof's secret internal disturbance, his desire to redress, control and experiment with the female form.

Robert Woods in GATLING GUN

The American actor Robert Woods appeared in six Jess Franco films, all made in 1973, including LA COMTESSE PERVERSE, AL OTRO LADO DEL ESPEJO [two of the director's best films of that era], the Sade adaptation PLAISIR A TROIS, the thriller THE EYES OF DR. ORLOFF and two Maciste films, YUKA and LES GLOUTONNES.

He also was a capable leading man in a number of Spaghetti Westerns of the 1960s and 70s. One of those, GATLING GUN (1968), came out last year on DORADO DVD. It was one of 2009's most welcome and underappreciated DVD presentations of a good, if obscure, Eurogenre item.

Pamela Stanford in MACISTE ET LES GLOUTONNES

Pamela Stanford

Pamela Stanford aka Monique Delaunay entertains the troops as the chanteuse in Eurocine's ELSA FRAULEIN SS aka FRAULEIN DEVIL. This is one of the six Eurocine produced Nazi exploitation features contained in the Dutch boxset noted in the previous blog. She's the only reason to see this one. I've got this on the vintage CAPTIVE WOMEN 4: FRAULEIN DEVIL prerecord VHS.

Thanks to bdc over on the Latarnia Forums for noting this on THE FRANCO LOUNGE. At least one of these has footage from a Jess Franco film. That would be JAILHOUSE WARDRESS which uses footage from Franco's BARBED WIRE DOLLS [see below] in a different context. Originally the footage was seen in UN PARADIS POUR LES BRUTES, UN ENFER POUR LES FEMMES aka Les gardiennes du pénitencier (1979.) This was altered by Eurocine by adding scenes from A l'est de Berlin and Train Special pour Hitler, according to OBSESSION: THE FILMS OF JESS FRANCO.

The only one of these titles I've seen is ELSA FRAULEIN SS aka FRAULEIN DEVIL (1977), featuring Jess Franco regular Olivier Mathot (EXORCISM)as a Nazi officer and Pamela Stanford aka Monique Delaunay aka LORNA, THE EXORCIST as a chanteuse aboard the Nazi vice train. If it weren't for her I wouldn't have been able to sit through it. Pretty dire.

Wyler appeared as the title character in Leon Klimovsky's THE RATTLER KID

Richard Wyler (1923-2010) : Real name: Richard Stapley. The UK born actor moved to the US after appearing on stage in England. He appeared in a number of Hollywood films from the late 1940s onward, including THE STRANGE DOOR (1951) and Hitchcock's FRENZY (1972), playing an unbilled role in the latter. He eventually changed his name to Richard Wyler and returned to Europe in the 1960s, appearing as THE MAN FROM INTERPOL in the UK lensed TV series. He also played the male lead in Riccardo Freda's FX 18 COPLAN CASSE TOUT (1965), Eugenio Martin's THE BOUNTY KILLER and Jess Franco's THE GIRL FROM RIO (1968), among others. He reportedly died of kidney failure last Friday in Palm Springs CA, according to the obit on Tom Bett's WESTERNS ALL'ITALIANA blog. I interviewed Richard in 1994 for my Riccardo Freda SE of ETC magazine. He was refreshingly candid and had a tart sense of humor about his experiences with old time Hollywood directors, Tomas Milian, George Sanders, Jess Franco and Alfred Hitchcock (both of whom he disliked).

He told me that he thought THE GIRL FROM RIO was a "terrible film" and that Franco didn't seem to know what he was doing. He also criticized Jess for consulting adult magazines for his imagery and he also complained that producer Harry Alan Towers didn't pay him his full promised salary. According to Wyler, Franco took him to a "sleazy bar" in Spain and tried to convince him to do an upcoming nude scene. Wyler became indignant and refused. When I reported that Franco went on to do a number of explicit hardcore films in the 70s and 80s he said that it didn't surprise him. He also spoke of how George Sanders was very depressed during the shoot due to financial problems.

He said that he thought THE BOUNTY KILLER was his best European film because of the "chemistry" between the character he played and the outlaw played by Milian. He didn't like Milian personally, finding him "obnoxious" but conceded he was a good actor. Wyler was a classically trained actor with a restrained approach and still seemed put out that the Method-trained Milian managed to steal the film with his over-the-top acting style.

Wyler was also a novelist, producer and race car driver at various points in his life.
