Pamela Stanford

Pamela Stanford aka Monique Delaunay entertains the troops as the chanteuse in Eurocine's ELSA FRAULEIN SS aka FRAULEIN DEVIL. This is one of the six Eurocine produced Nazi exploitation features contained in the Dutch boxset noted in the previous blog. She's the only reason to see this one. I've got this on the vintage CAPTIVE WOMEN 4: FRAULEIN DEVIL prerecord VHS.

Thanks to bdc over on the Latarnia Forums for noting this on THE FRANCO LOUNGE. At least one of these has footage from a Jess Franco film. That would be JAILHOUSE WARDRESS which uses footage from Franco's BARBED WIRE DOLLS [see below] in a different context. Originally the footage was seen in UN PARADIS POUR LES BRUTES, UN ENFER POUR LES FEMMES aka Les gardiennes du pénitencier (1979.) This was altered by Eurocine by adding scenes from A l'est de Berlin and Train Special pour Hitler, according to OBSESSION: THE FILMS OF JESS FRANCO.

The only one of these titles I've seen is ELSA FRAULEIN SS aka FRAULEIN DEVIL (1977), featuring Jess Franco regular Olivier Mathot (EXORCISM)as a Nazi officer and Pamela Stanford aka Monique Delaunay aka LORNA, THE EXORCIST as a chanteuse aboard the Nazi vice train. If it weren't for her I wouldn't have been able to sit through it. Pretty dire.

RICHARD WYLER (1923-2010)

Richard Wyler (1923-2010) : Real name: Richard Stapley. The UK born actor moved to the US after appearing on stage in England. He appeared in a number of Hollywood films from the late 1940s onward, including THE STRANGE DOOR (1951) and Hitchcock's FRENZY (1972), playing an unbilled role in the latter. He eventually changed his name to Richard Wyler and returned to Europe in the 1960s, appearing as THE MAN FROM INTERPOL in the UK lensed TV series. He also played the male lead in Riccardo Freda's FX 18 COPLAN CASSE TOUT (1965), Eugenio Martin's THE BOUNTY KILLER and Jess Franco's THE GIRL FROM RIO (1968), among others. He reportedly died of kidney failure last Friday in Palm Springs CA, according to the obit on Tom Bett's WESTERNS ALL'ITALIANA blog. I interviewed Richard in 1994 for my Riccardo Freda SE of ETC magazine. He was refreshingly candid and had a tart sense of humor about his experiences with old time Hollywood directors, Tomas Milian, George Sanders, Jess Franco and Alfred Hitchcock (both of whom he disliked).

He told me that he thought THE GIRL FROM RIO was a "terrible film" and that Franco didn't seem to know what he was doing. He also criticized Jess for consulting adult magazines for his imagery and he also complained that producer Harry Alan Towers didn't pay him his full promised salary. According to Wyler, Franco took him to a "sleazy bar" in Spain and tried to convince him to do an upcoming nude scene. Wyler became indignant and refused. When I reported that Franco went on to do a number of explicit hardcore films in the 70s and 80s he said that it didn't surprise him. He also spoke of how George Sanders was very depressed during the shoot due to financial problems.

He said that he thought THE BOUNTY KILLER was his best European film because of the "chemistry" between the character he played and the outlaw played by Milian. He didn't like Milian personally, finding him "obnoxious" but conceded he was a good actor. Wyler was a classically trained actor with a restrained approach and still seemed put out that the Method-trained Milian managed to steal the film with his over-the-top acting style.

Wyler was also a novelist, producer and race car driver at various points in his life.

Influences: LES YEUX SANS VISAGE (1960)

It's difficult not to see and understand the influence Georges Franju's once notorious, eternally exquisite Sadean surgical horror had on the visual style, plot elements and mood of Jess Franco's first horror film, GRITOS EN LA NOCHE (1961) and the much later FACELESS (1988). Both of them are important markers in his career and he performs his own personal variations on the mad doctor in search of a new face for a beloved female relative theme while adding elements from German Expressionism and other films (cf THE LODGER). But I now find GRITOS... and FACELESS to be two of my lesser favorites of his horror films and somewhat more dated than the Franju film, which seems fresh and disturbing each time you see it... and in a quieter key.

I think Franco found his true voice first in THE SADISTIC BARON VON KLAUS (1962) and then in MISS MUERTE aka THE DIABOLICAL DR. Z (1965). The 1982 SINISTER DR. ORLOFF is also an interesting variation and worth tracking down.

But LES YEUX SANS VISAGE does make an interesting double bill with any of those films to see where Jess Franco went and how he got there.

Jess Franco will appear at the OFFSCREEN FILM FEST with his films!

Thanks to Wim for this email regarding the showing of some rare 35mm prints of several key Jess Franco titles. The director and Lina Romay will be in attendance. Follow the link to the OFFSCREEN FESTIVAL site for details.

In addition some Eurowesterns will be screened. Here is a list from email along with the Franco titles. I'm especially interested in the reported 84m print of NECRONOMICON. The longest available is about 79m.

Alma Pereira (Lina Romay) is a female police officer [cf Al Pereira in 1972's LES ERBRANLEES {Howard Vernon) or Antonio Mayans in the 1982 BOTAS NEGRAS, LATIGO DE CUERO, etc] investigating the murder of an exotic dancer at a sleazy club in Malaga, Spain. Called to the Flamingo Club in a back alley of Antofagasta she confronts the prime suspect, Paula(Carmen Montes), a friend of the victim. After a brief Q & A the balance of the film shows what happened in the interval leading up to the killing, which turns out to be a crime of passion. Or is it all in the mind of Paula?

Robert Louis Stevenson's THE STRANGE CASE OF DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE may have been a starting point but this is a film essentially built around the late Friedrich Gulda's musical composition, an upbeat Jazz fantasia which takes us back to the ambiance of NECRONOMICON (1967), the story of the killing of the Prince by the demoniac woman in the garden of the Devil is repeated from that classic Jess Franco title. It is a film with obviously made with no budget, made up of mainly color variations, the morphing image of an exotic dancer and music. This has to be one of his lowest budgeted films. No sets except for an apartment, no real script, a situation rather than a story, a few lines of dialogue, one costume, an alley exterior, glittering nothingness. And Franco was his own operator! The last days of Orson Welles come to mind. Summed up with this note: Y NUNA MAS SE VOLVI A OIR HABLAR DEL SHOW DE PAULA-PAULA.

It's a magical, blessedly brief, experimental neo-noir which illustrates a terrific musical score and the director's boredom with the illusion of reality.. Like Jess himself, it's infused with joy and delightful surprises. Things that our troubled world can never get enough of.

Jess Franco has been in the movie business for as long as I've been alive and I thank him from the bottom of my heart.

Once upon a time in Spain Luis Garcia Berlanga told Jess Franco that all you need is a movie camera.... If Berlanga was his inspiration, along with Stevenson, many may be taken aback by the severe minimalism of the project. Franco regulars just need to know that it's %100 Jess Franco.

Wearing his dark glasses, a bright red pullover and smoking with class, Jess seems energized and younger than ever in the introduction and interviews. He defines himself as "young at heart" and is anxious (at 79!) to make a new series of films. He reminds us that age is not a matter of years but a state of mind. I don't think I've ever seen him as relaxed and happy. Interesting that he states this is his 209th [!] film. That's about what I put it at considering the alternate versions in his extensive filmography.

This DVD is worth seeing just for the Franco introduction, explanation and whatever-is-on-his-mind interview, all of which equal around 30m. And the Gulda Jazz soundtrack is worth the price of admission alone. This may be its creator's lowest- ever budgeted film but one of the best ones in terms of listening enjoyment. It is tier one Jess Franco? Or tier two? Part of the experience when dealing with Jess Franco is finding your own personal system of categorization.

It is presented in anamorphic widescreen (it looks about 1.85:1). Video and sound quality are sharp and clear.

Having seen it twice now I can attest that it takes on added interest on a follow-up visit as a stylish bookend, an extended lap dance or a pleasant way to spend an hour.

EMILIO VIEYRA (1920-2010)

The ugliest monster in the history of horror is sent out to...

SANGRE DE VIRGENES aka BLOOD OF THE VIRGINS: Banned in Argentina! The first vampire film made in Argentina, but it ended up banned as too bloody and sexy. Watch it on a double bill with FEMALE VAMPIRE...

Emilio Vieyra, sometimes referred to as the Roger Corman of Argentina, created his own New Wave of South American Cinefantastique starting in the 1960s with such low budget, sexy, imaginative, pulpy and just plain outrageous titles as SANGRE DE VIRGENES (1967) and PLACER SANGRIENTO aka FEAST OF FLESH. His most original and bizarre title was LA VENGANZA DEL SEXO, which would become THE CURIOUS DR HUMPP (1969) in its dubbed US version which was sexed-up with nudie inserts by Jerald Intrator. I have all of these on DVD and watch them frequently. Highly entertaining and stylish they all have a unique atmosphere.

Shot in lurid hues, SANGRE DE VIRGENES is very much in the spirit of Jean Rollin and especially Jess Franco's LA COMTESSE NOIRE considering that vampire bats were suggested by filming seagulls through red filters! It works. THE CURIOUS DR HUMPP has a mad scientist, acting under the orders of another mad scientist's disembodied brain, sending out pug-ugly robots to kidnap men and women for transgressive sexual experiments. Shot in atmospheric b&w at times it seems very similar to Jess Franco's Dr. Orloff films and THE DIABOLICAL DR. Z in mood, imagery and plotline.

Vieyra also made Women in Prison/Women in Peril items (CORRECCIONAL DE MUJERES; Perversion in a Girl's School), a western and a politically themed musical, ADIOS ABUELO (1996) before retiring.

I just happened to revisit Vieyra's noirish PLACER SANGRIENTO aka FEAST OF FLESH last weekend before learning of the director's death on Jan. 25 at the age of 89. PLACER... presents yet another mad scientist (hiding behind an ugly-man Halloween mask) hypnotizing (with haunting organ music), kidnapping and then murdering sexy women with overdoses of heroin! At times PLACER...plays like an unhinged episode of the old DRAGNET TV series with nudie elements added. It was shot in Paraguay during 1965, according to Pete Tombs' essential text MONDO MACABRO, which has a chapter on his work.

If you haven't discovered Vieyra's delightfully twisted universe now is the time to do it. MONDO MACABRO offers SANGRE DE VIRGENES on DVD with English subtitles and there is a SOMETHING WEIRD DVD of THE CURIOUS DR HUMPP with a ton of supplements.

PETER MARTELL (1938-2010)

...to the video world of Jess Franco

Pietro Martellanza aka Peter Martell appeared in at least 40 films from 1963 to 2009, including two directed by Jess Franco. The ruggedly handsome ex-stuntman played Barnaby in THE BLOODY JUDGE (1970) and Dracula in KILLER BARBYS VS DRACULA (2002). One has to note how his appearance, beyond aging factors, transforms between those two markers. He obviously lived through hard times. Martell's ilfe took a downward spiral after appearing in numerous Spaghetti Westerns from the mid 60s to the mid 1970s. When the genre died he faded into obscurity and ended up living as a recluse in a van near his Alpine hometown, Bolzano, where he died Feb. 4. He reportedly attempted suicide before Jess Franco gave him a comeback role in his colorful horror-musical. He appeared in a few more films before his death at age 72.

Martell could have been a contender but his personal problems seemed to hold him back. He was finally given an apartment by the Bolzano town council as a shelter in which to live out his days.

He was an intense presence, especially as the frenetic, sleazy fall-guy in THE FRENCH SEX MURDERS and in some of his Spaghetti Western roles. He has an amusing walk-on as himself, alongside Gordon Mitchell, in a surreal moment in Demofilo Fidani's SAVAGE GUNS (1971).

A personal favorite role was as the impulsive astronaut who gives space station Captain Rod Jackson (Giacomo Rossi Stuart) a hard time in Antonio Margheriti's GAMMA ONE episode, PLANET ON THE PROWL. That was made in 1964. In 1965 he made an easy-to-miss appearance as another astronaut in Mario Bava's PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES. He's seen on the spaceship's video screen communicating with Barry Sullivan early on. He jokes with the actor playing Sullivan's younger brother. He doesn't appear in the rest of the film, strangely enough. He seems to have either quit or was replaced for some reason.

Martell had a striking, vivid onscreen persona.

The hunted in DEVIL HUNTER/THE MAN HUNTER/EL CANIBAL/SEXO CANIBAL....

From GRITOS EN LA NOCHE (1961) to SNAKEWOMAN (2005) the search for an elusive woman forms the structure of the narrative. Women are at the center of Franco's world and filmography, vampires like Irina in FEMALE VAMPIRE (1973) or Soledad Miranda's Countess in VAMPYROS LESBOS, sadists like Eugenie in EUGENIE DE SADE (1970) or Martine in PLAISIR A TROIS (1973). Women as predators.

Sometimes, as in his numerous Women in Prison titles, the woman can be both the predator (the female wardens in 99 WOMEN, BARBED WIRE DOLLS, etc) and victims (the tortured inmates in those films (usually played by Lina Romay).

Two 1980 co-productions, SEXO CANIBAL aka DEVIL HUNTER and WHITE CANNIBAL QUEEN aka MONDO CANNIBALE aka CANNIBALS, present the woman-as-pursued/victim side of the coin.

Watching both again recently allowed me to set aside the fact that they are hardly first tier Franco or even good cannibal films and take them for what they are: in the case of DEVIL HUNTER, a monster movie-adventure as the director points out in the Severin DVD interview; a personal statement of his position in the industry and a commentary on Italian cannibal films in CANNIBALS.

Given the availability of Al Cliver, who had already appeared in Fulci's successful comback, ZOMBIE (1979), I take it that these were shot back-to-back. DEVIL HUNTER, a French-Spanish-German co production, CANNIBALS, a French-Spanish co production with the Italians as perhaps silent partners (A FILM BY FRANCO PROSPERI). Both deal with an adventurer-hunter (Cliver) who travels to a tropical region in search of an abducted by woman. They both end with Cliver having to fight a cannibal to get away with the woman. The fact that the woman is a lithe blond in both cases is not insignificant. White is civilized, Black is primitive in both. Ironically, in CANNIBALS, the cannibal tribe are played by Spanish gypsies (according to the director) who are not black but do wear colorful, stylized facial makeup.

When the Portuguese guide, Mr. Martin, shows up, played by Jess Franco himself, it's difficult to not hear the character's self defense as the director's own self-summation. He complains that he's just trying to keep body and soul together by dealing with both sides of the struggle. The sexual abuse of the abducted woman in DEVIL HUNTER, then, is a crude way to insert sexploitation (excuse the bad pun) into a gore-adventure scenario, while there's no sex at all, but jaw-dropping slow motion cannibal feasts in CANNIBALS.

Jess is having fun with the genre he obviously has little respect for. He's not really well-suited to either adventure films or cannibal-gore films. What he can do is have as much fun as possible, put in his own personal comments and self-critique, and run for cover.

LINA ROMAY FILMOGRAPHY

I recently discovered this online filmography of Lina Romay. Please note any omissions/factual errors you find in the comment area.

The filmo lists her involvement with The Black Man's Guide to Understanding Black Women (executive producer), a film of which I was totally unaware. It's on the IMDB as a US production but her name isn't mentioned. Can anyone clarify this credit?

Portuguese Locations; Deja Vu

Below is an example of a familiar location seen in a number of Jess Franco films. The below shot is from VOODOO PASSION aka RUF DER BLONDEN GOTTIN (1977). The same location, shot from the exact same set-up also appears in CECILIA aka Aberraciones Sexuales de una Mujer Casada (1980). It is near the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park.

Sintra was considered by Lord Byron to be the most beautiful city in the world. The magical atmosphere of such films as VIRGIN AMONG THE LIVING DEAD, DRACULA CONTRA FRANKENSTEIN and LA FILLE DE DRACULA also owe much to these locations.

His films always have a certain look to them and it has a lot to do with the recycled locations as well as techniques.

Shark attack!

A Gothic Masterpiece directed by "Aristide Massaccesi"

Joe D'Amato fan: A Duel of the Titans? D'Amato would rework three mid 1970's Franco films into the composite JUSTINE (1979).

D'Amato took a chance and produced the final film of the virtually unemployable Lucio Fulci. A financial failure, the moody, low key thriller is one of the Fulici's least gory and most finely tuned horror films.

Let me start by stating that if Aristide Massaccesi aka Joe D'Amato did nothing else except produce Claudio Fragasso's stunningly round the bend TROLL 2 (1990) he would be qualify for immortality in my book. But he did more... much, much more.

Aristide Massaccesi was a cinematographer (WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO SOLANGE?), a producer of such films as Michele Soavi's acclaimed directorial debut STAGE FRIGHT (1987), and a director of countless films bearing the credit Directed by Joe D'Amato. Look at the list below from the IMDB. I'm pretty sure it's incomplete. It makes him even more prolific than Jess Franco (whom the IMDB gives 190 features, which is also probably incomplete), who is often cited as the most prolific director of all time. I once wrote a series of columns for the late, great ETC magazine titled FRANCO VS. D'AMATO. But the two Titans really form kind of the Yin and Yang of European Trash Cinema from the 1960s to the present. It's not the quantity, but the quality. Right?

While waiting for a ride to a New Year's Eve party last Thursday I watched D'Amato's BLUE ANGEL CAFE aka OBJECT OF DESIRE on the PRIVATE SCREENINGS video. This 1989 filmed-in-New Orleans soft core melodrama is about a candidate for Governor (Richard Brown) who becomes obsessed and then destroyed by his lust for a cheap lounge chanteuse (Tara Buckman). It's a cheap, glossily photographed, sleazy, highly entertaining update of a classic film. And it has an electrifying uncredited cameo by Laura Gemser doing of nude photo shoot of Ms. Buckman. It took either courage or a mixture of greed and pretension to use Von Sternberg's masterwork as a model for this FILMIRAGE knock-off. But it works. It looks like a cable telefilm now and the rather mild sex scenes seem tame given what is now available via VOD and on the Internet.

Later, during the party, I discussed D'Amato's career with a friend who expressed "disappointment" with his total immersion in hard core porno from the early 80s to the time of his death. Actually, the hard core numbers I've seen are impressively photographed and have a lighter-than-air quality with little of the mean spirit quality hard core sometimes has. They are well-crafted fantasies by a master cinematographer-director.

But that was then and this is now. Massaccesi became Joe D'Amato after using his real name for his best film, LA MORTE HA SORRISO ALL'ASSASSINO (1973) aka DEATH SMILES AT MURDER, a non-linear Gothic featuring Ewa Aulin and Klaus Kinski, a haunting Berto Pisano score and an ending which rewards multiple viewings. It stands up to the best of Mario Bava and Riccardo Freda but the director has nowhere near their reputation. He doesn't even have the wide fan base of Franco or Lucio Fulci.

As the IMDB filmography illustrates he's still credited with films up to 2005! That's a bulging portfolio with numerous hidden treasures and pleasant surprises like BLUE ANGEL CAFE.

I think Massaccesi/D'Amato is every bit as qualified for auteur status as many others. His work ranges from westerns (including the hard core JOE D'AMATO'S OUTLAWS), nunsploitation (IMAGES IN A CONVENT), Cannibal films (EMANUELLE AND THE LAST CANNIBALS), zombie films (EROTIC NIGHTS OF THE LIVING DEAD which mixed hard core, Laura Gemser and tropical flesh eaters) killer-shark horror (DEEP BLOOD), post-apocalypse sci-fi (ENDGAME; 2020 TEXAS GLADIATORS), peplum (the 1982 CALIGULA: THE UNTOLD STORY, 30 seconds of which appears during an orgy scene in Borowczyk's 1983 THE ART OF LOVE [see the new DVD from Severin]). Given that Borowczyk is often cited as an upscale pornographer D'Amato may seem like a busy imitator.

In 1979 D'Amato took the role of supervising editor, compositing three Franco films, reworking them into JUSTINE (1979-1980), a hardcore feature he post-produced. I'll be discussing this process in more detail in a future blog.

I certainly haven't seen as many D'Amato films as I have Jess Franco films and I only have a fraction of his extensive filmography on VHS/DVD, whereas my Franco collection is taking over everything else. But Joe D'Amato was a worthy, self-made artist/artisan of the erotic and this January 23rd marks the 11th anniversary of his death.
