Portuguese Locations; Deja Vu

These 19th Century structures, including Sintra's Municipal tower, are captured in the opening shots of DRACULA CONTRA FRANKENSTEIN (1971).

The castle at Sintra, Portugal, an official photo with the national flag. NOT a shot from a Jess Franco film.

Below is an example of a familiar location seen in a number of Jess Franco films. The below shot is from VOODOO PASSION aka RUF DER BLONDEN GOTTIN (1977). The same location, shot from the exact same set-up also appears in CECILIA aka Aberraciones Sexuales de una Mujer Casada (1980). It is near the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park.

Sintra was considered by Lord Byron to be the most beautiful city in the world. The magical atmosphere of such films as VIRGIN AMONG THE LIVING DEAD, DRACULA CONTRA FRANKENSTEIN and LA FILLE DE DRACULA also owe much to these locations.

His films always have a certain look to them and it has a lot to do with the recycled locations as well as techniques.

Was this the only viable angle? Maybe. Can anyone identify this location from any other JF films?

Sintra's Municipal tower can also be seen in "Succubus", I'm fairly sure.
And that other location, with the wall coverd by some vegetation, can be briefly seen in "Vampyros Lesbos", but shot form a different angle.

Here are a couple of photos taken last year on location of VIRGIN AMONG THE LD (Cascais). You can click on the pics for larger images.

Is it possible that this was also in one of the Fu Manchu films, the one where they take over a castle ?

That may be in Barcelona which has a similar castle.

Rather cool place you've got here. Thanks the author for it. I like such themes and anything connected to this matter. BTW, try to add some pics :).

Jess Franco's movies really make me want to visit Portugal. Maybe one day I'l get to go.

On the subject of Voodoo Passion, I think it's a rather underrated Franco movie.

Yes, same here. I've always wanted to go to Madiera especially.

VOODOO PASSION is of the lineage of THE DIABOLICAL DR Z, NIGHTMARES COME AT NIGHT, NECRONOMICON. But in a totally different style and with a spy twists. A fascinating genre mix and I like the exotic visuals.

I love VOODOO PASSION because I simply adore anything connected with voodoo. And this is an excellent voodoo movie, portraying voodoo as it really is - not inherently evil. And when you mix erotica, spies and voodoo - well honestly what more could you want in a movie?

dont forget "love letters from a portuguese nun", filmed at the same place as the "virgin among the living dead", Cascais, that is. although the last part of "love letters" is in the center of sintra.

that last photo you post is also in Cascais, right by the "sets" of "love letters"

"Succubus" is filmed in Lisbon and Belém
